Hal Smeltzly played baseball for Florida Southern College, and right after his graduation in 1957, he became head coach. He had a 20-year coaching career with a win-loss record of 391-166. Smeltzly won three NCAA National Championships with Florida Southern. Hal also won six regional crowns. After coaching 20 years, Florida Southern named Smeltzly athletic director. As athletic director, he won 18 more titles. His jersey number 7 was retired.
