Norm Carlson was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1933. Norm started college at St. Louis University, but then transferred to the University of Florida where he received his business degree, graduating in 1956. His first job was with the Atlanta Journal before becoming an assistant to the Athletic Director at Auburn University. Finally, Carlson ended up back at his alma mater (the University of Florida) as an Assistant Athletic Director. As the Assistant Athletic Director at UF, Norm was in charge of the Public Relations department. Carlson’s most memorable experience was Steve Spurrier’s winning of the Heisman trophy. Norm Carlson retired in June 2002 as Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Information after more than 40 years of working for the University of Florida Athletic Association. In August 2002, he was named Assistant Athletic Director/Historian for the Gator athletic program. He served eight years on the NCAA Public Relations Committee (1968-75). Carlson is a member of the UF Lettermen’s Association Hall of Fame, the Florida-Georgia Hall of Fame and Florida Blue Key. In 1991, Carlson was the author, with Steve Spurrier, of “Gators, The Inside Story of Florida’s First SEC Title.” He was also editor/historian of the recently released book, “100 Years of Gator Football.”
