This dynamic duo led the dogged pursuit of an NHL franchise for Tampa, leading to the Tampa Bay Lightning hitting the ice in 1992. Phil Esposito had tremendous connections to the NHL where he secured his place among the elite in NHL history in goals, points and assists. Henry Lee Paul was a legal advisor to the Tampa Bay Hockey Group, the organization that was working to secure a franchise for Tampa. Together they found the investors, navigated the complex NHL expansion process, and rallied the community to land the franchise which has become one of Florida’s most iconic sports teams. It is because of their vision and leadership that Tampa is home to the three-time Stanley Cup Champions Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning have become a central part of the city’s identity, and Phil Esposito’s and Henry Lee Paul’s role in making that happen will forever be remembered.
